During the second quarter, Burnett received a blow to the head while tackling a ball carrier. He immediately collapsed on the field and was transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Burnett is currently listed in stable but critical condition. According to Dr. William Wilson, an attending physician at Huntsville Hospital, Burnett suffered a traumatic brain injury and is undergoing treatment and monitoring.
"Our university community is deeply concerned for Medrick's well-being," said Alabama A&M Athletic Director Phillip Davis. "Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this trying time."
Concussions, or mild traumatic brain injuries, are common in contact sports like football. While most concussions resolve quickly, severe instances can cause prolonged symptoms and complications.
Dr. Wilson said that Burnett's prognosis is uncertain. The recovery process for traumatic brain injuries varies depending on the severity of the injury and individual factors.
"We are closely monitoring Medrick's condition and providing him with the best possible care," Dr. Wilson stated. "His recovery will be a long-term process that will require extensive rehabilitation."
The Alabama A&M football team and university community have expressed their support for Burnett. Teammates have visited him in the hospital, and a prayer vigil was held on campus on Sunday.
"Medrick is an exceptional young man and a beloved member of our team," said head coach Connell Maynor. "We will continue to do everything we can to support him and his family."
