No. 24 Gonzaga Rebounds And Opens WCC Play With Emphatic 86-67 Win

After an underwhelming non-conference performance, No. 24 Gonzaga put the disappointment behind and started West Coast Conference play with a resounding 86-67 victory over the University of San Diego Wednesday night at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

Gonzaga Dominates Inside

The Zags' dominance in the paint was evident from the start. Drew Timme led the way with 21 points, while Chet Holmgren added 16 points and 12 rebounds. Gonzaga outrebounded San Diego 40-27, including a 14-4 advantage on the offensive glass.

Balanced Scoring Effort

Timme and Holmgren weren't the only Zags to contribute offensively. Andrew Nembhard scored 15 points, while Rasir Bolton added 14 off the bench. Gonzaga shot 53.2% from the field and 43.8% from three-point range.

Tough Night for San Diego

San Diego never found its footing on offense, shooting just 35.3% from the field. Leading scorer Yauhen Massalski was held to just 11 points on 4-of-12 shooting. The Toreros also struggled with turnovers, committing 12 to Gonzaga's eight.

Mark Few's Comments

"I'm proud of our guys for bouncing back tonight," said Gonzaga head coach Mark Few. "We didn't play our best in the non-conference, but we're starting to find our rhythm now."

Looking Ahead

Gonzaga (11-4, 1-0 WCC) will look to extend its win streak to three games when they host Portland on Saturday. San Diego (9-5, 0-1 WCC) will try to rebound against Pepperdine on Thursday.
