Walker Kessler's First Half Keeps Jazz In Reach Against Mavericks

Jazz rookie Walker Kessler is learning about the NBA by asking

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - Walker Kessler, the Utah Jazz's first-round draft pick, turned in an impressive first half on Monday night, helping the Jazz stay within striking distance of the Dallas Mavericks at halftime.

Kessler, starting in place of the injured Rudy Gobert, scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in the opening 24 minutes. He was particularly effective on the defensive end, blocking three shots and altering several others.

Kessler's presence in the paint was a major factor for the Jazz. He held Dallas star Luka Doncic to just 4-of-13 shooting in the first half and also forced multiple turnovers.

"He's an exceptional defensive presence," said Jazz coach Will Hardy. "He's not the most athletic guy, but he's got great size and instincts. He's going to be a special player for us."

Despite Kessler's strong play, the Jazz still trailed the Mavericks by eight points at halftime, 58-50. However, Kessler's performance has given the Jazz a glimmer of hope that they can pull off an upset in the second half.

"He's given us a chance," said Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson. "He's making plays on both ends of the floor. If we can keep that up, we can definitely come back and win this game."

The second half of the game is shaping up to be an intriguing battle. The Mavericks have been one of the hottest teams in the league lately, while the Jazz are looking to make a statement with a victory over one of the Western Conference's elite teams.

Kessler's performance will be crucial for the Jazz's chances. If he can continue to dominate defensively and contribute offensively, the Jazz have a fighting chance of pulling out a win.
